Named after conjoined twins Maria and Daria Krivoshivapova, born in Russia in January 1950, were removed from their mother’s custody at birth to be studied by Soviet physiologists. Their mother was told they had died at childbirth.
The mice were part of a 2017 experiment where surgeon Xiaoping Ren grafted a mouse's head onto another mouse in order to perfect a human head transplant.
